This is an superb small jar from Tesuque pueblo, dating to perhaps the 1890’s. It is is high shouldered with the neck emerging from a flattened band at the top of the midbody; to dramatic effect. The white slip is creamy and soft making a lovely backdrop for the cloud and rain designs. The rim and base are slipped and polished red and three sets of richly painted black double framing lines serve to separate the design fields and to give this small jar a large feel. This is a fine example of how beautiful and historically fascinating a collection of small historic pueblo pots can be.
Condition is excellent and unrestored. gallery owner Robert Nichols chose to not restore pots in his collection even if they had chips (which this one doesn’t) in order to keep them in the original form.
