This is a superb bowl. It is early based on the beautiful stone polishing rather than later rag wiped slip. The red is rich and dark; the form lovely and thickly made for home use. Very unusual is the equally superb polychrome interior. In the next 25 years, San Ildefonso would become known for its black-on-black pottery due to Maria Martinez innovative and highly publicized pottery. But in the 19th century, black-on-red and polychromes were widely used and loved. This bowl having both decorative forms is rare, exciting and beautiful.
Condition is excellant, original, unrestored
