This is a beautiful and so unusual jar. It features both tan and white slips on the same jar, something I’ve seen only very rarely at Zia. Four colors at Zia so often are saved for larger bird jars so the artistry on this small child sized olla is most welcome and surprising. And the colors themselves are so rich and dark and satisfying. The form is nice; thickly potted possibly for home use. The white band with dots is a lovely touch, giving a lightly colored break to the color intensity. But this jar is all about color and it delivers that magnificently. The wide red band at the top of the underbody is indicative of an earlier pot, certainly a pottery who had learned her craft at least at the beginning of the 20th century if not earlier.

Condition is excellant, original, unrestored
