This is a fine San Juan large serving bowl or medium sized dough bowl from the 1890’s. It is a classic high shouldered example w/beautiful blue fire clouds near the base and random, drippy red lines purposely applied to the tan under-body in a most modern, painterly fashion; unifying the overall red and tan design fields. These red lines and blue fire clouds are beautifully captured in photographer Addison Doty’s masterful detail shot; click on it for a close view.
Subtlty is everything in the old San Juan pottery, whether in the black-on-grey or the red-on-tan examples. This one is beautiful especially when we look quietly and closely.
Condition is fine w/one rim chip; original unrestored.
