Acquired by the Street family for their gallery Streets of Taos, (which we now proudly occupy) in the 1950’s, this piece was purchased on the pueblo from the Martinez gallery, run by Maria’s son Popovi Da. It is unsigned, perhaps because Maria was trying for red, bur the jar fired what, to us, is clearly a stunning brown with fire-clouds. There is a note inside by Maria where she says she made this as a lamp base (can you imagine!) in 1940-’42. A beautiful piece with great provenance; a wonderful opportunity to own a large Maria at a reasonable price. Condition: excellent with old drill hole in base Provenance: Streets of Taos Gallery
