Zia Big Bellied Large Polychrome Canteen by Vivianita Shije, 1938

Superb, large and rare; beautifully and generously formed to hold larger amount of water. So the canteen appears to be utilitarian. However it bears an early signature and date signifying the possibility that it was commissioned or made as a gift. 1938 is very early for signed pottery at Zia so another Pueblo pottery mystery for us to ponder. Bold, large, traditional designs possibly depicting clouds, rain and healthy plants. Traditionally made, traditionally fired. A gem.
