Tesuque Utilitarian Serving Bowl with Primitive Flowing Water Design, c. 1890

This bowl is beautifully made, and the design is decidedly primitive. Perhaps mom or grandmother made it and a child in the family was charged with painting a beautiful design (which is one way that the tradition was perpetuated. So it appears to have been made for home use and not for an emerging art market that demanded perfection. Bowls like this challenge our ordinary sense of beauty. The fact that 125 years after it was created, this bowl is still with us is proof that I’m not the only one to find it beautiful and wonderful.
