Santo Domingo/Kewa Large Storage Jar, c. 1910
$15,000.00
This is a very large utilitarian storage jar. It is high shouldered with a very subtle rim flair, thick walled and built for use. it is very clean, with no discernible water stains so it’s possible that it stored dried goods or could even have been commissioned as an art object for an early local collector or even a Santa Fe hotel. Shipping such a large heavy object would have been a challenge at the beginning of the last century. The spinach weed painted design is simple and traditional with black triangular mountain or cloud forms in the neck, taking the form of chained six pointed stars. There is a wide red band at the top of the underbody. Creating and firing such a large jar is the mark of an experienced master potter. A superb and rare example.
