Dolorita (1923-1995) was a wonderful potter, one of the few Santa Clara potters who chose to work in a polychrome style. I seldom see her work now and I’ve never seen a large plate; this one is a beauty. The beautifully executed deer under clouds and rain with healthy flourishing plant life is seemingly inspired by the flat style designs of the Dorothy Dunn school of painting from the 1940’s. The fanciful blue and tan/pink deer emerge vividly against the very deep red stone polished slip. Thick walled and rather heavy, a sweet and very rare example.
