Guadeloupe Ortiz’ older figures are not often seen so it is fun to have one available now. Guadeloupe was married to esteemed figurative potter, Seferina Ortiz. This portly fellow sports a vest, bow tie and bracelet. One hand is held to his cheek and one to his belly and he seems genuinely glad to see us.
The paint is rich and black. It is set off by large areas of the now rare white Cochiti which is soapy white and lovely.
The piece is quite large, a full 10″ tall and dates to perhaps 1980.
It is in excellent, original, unrestored condition.
Provenance: The Collection of Rutt Bridges
