Cimmaron Grover
Cimmaron Grover is a most unique Hopi carver. While he usually (though not exclusively) renders carvings of traditional Hopi Katsina’s, carved traditionally from cottonwood root, his work challenges our expectations of what katsina carvings look like. His unusual “...carvings are made with arms out to welcome everybody”. Barry Walsh describes the unusual experience of Cimmaron’s work saying that “ he pushes the limits of katsina art”.
This summary is my own, drawn from Barry Walsh’s excellent chapter on Cimmaron in his new book The Great Tradition of Hopi Katsina Carvers, available at my gallery and on Amazon.
