I believe this beautiful and early olla to be from Santa Clara pueblo. It has simply beautiful form w/pie crust rim that flattens at the base of the neck to dramatic, sculptural effect, forming what might be described as an early rainbow band. The mid-body is wide and rather low, giving the jar a presence that is larger than the usual measurements would suggest (although at 13″ wide, this is a large jar). The mid-body then narrows gracefully to the base. Golden highlights leak through the incompletely reduced firing to gorgeous effect.
Old jars would often be on pueblo dirt floors when used in the home. For that reason, Addison Doty took some beautiful shots so we can see such bowls and jars from that vantage point; as the pueblo family may have seen them.
This is an outstanding and beautiful jar in excellent condition.
